Why is playing computer games so popular? The phenomenon of video games

Video games have become both an art form and an industry. They are now developed and played on a wide variety of platforms, including smartphones, standard desktop computers and laptops, dedicated games consoles (both home consoles and handhelds, such as the Nintendo Switch) and other devices. Video games have become a social phenomenon, with players challenging one another individually or in groups (as in multiplayer games, for example). There are various genres of games, amongst which everyone can find something to suit them – from shooters and sports games to a variety of puzzles and logic games. Some game genres are more demanding than others. They are designed to cater to players of varying skill levels.

Many people play video games for entertainment, often in the form of casual games. Video games can also be used for educational purposes, and are sometimes employed in STEM subjects as an alternative to, or to complement, traditional teaching methods. Gaming can also be a way of life – it is possible to earn a living from professional gaming, for example by taking part in e-sports competitions or by streaming gameplay online, where internet users interested in this type of entertainment can watch it.

A gaming room. How do you set up a gaming room?

Anyone thinking about designing a gaming room should plan its layout carefully. It’s worth preparing a design for the gaming room in advance so that you can adjust the furniture layout ‘on paper’. A gaming room should be arranged in such a way that it is functional and that the user has quick and easy access to all the necessary equipment and accessories (these should be within the gamer’s reach).

First and foremost, you should ensure that the layout of your gaming room is well thought out. There shouldn’t be too many unnecessary gadgets and superfluous devices, which could not only make it difficult to move around the room but also detract from its visual appeal. A gaming setup can impress with its modern look and futuristic design – it’s not worth spoiling the effect by placing lots of decorations or equipment there that don’t fit in with the overall scheme. The gamer should have easy access to their console, computer and peripherals. Gaming gadgets and, for example, collector’s editions of games are recommended, as they will add extra charm to the gamer’s room.

What sort of equipment should be in a gamer’s room? Equipment for a ‘gaming room’

The layout of a gamer’s room is one thing. Another is the equipment. To create a professional gaming setup, you need to invest in decent kit and gaming furniture. What should be included in a gamer’s room set? Here are a few examples:

  • A gaming desk – no gaming room is complete without a decent desk. A comfortable gaming desk should provide enough space to accommodate a PC, a monitor, as well as a keyboard, headphones and collector’s editions of your favourite games. You should adjust your gaming desk to suit your height so that you feel comfortable, especially if you spend long hours in front of the monitor every day. You can choose a gaming desk with LED lighting to enhance the room’s aesthetics.
  • Gaming chair – gaming chairs are pieces of furniture designed specifically for gamers. A gaming chair differs from a standard office chair in both appearance and functionality. Its key features include, amongst others: a wide seat, adjustable armrests, a headrest, a lumbar support cushion, and features such as a rocking function or RGB lighting. An ergonomic gaming chair allows you to sit comfortably even during long gaming sessions. Some gaming chairs have a futuristic design, making them look as if they’ve been taken straight from a spaceship!
  • Gaming keyboard – a PC gamer’s gaming room (though it may also come in handy for console gamers) should definitely include a decent mechanical gaming keyboard. This type of keyboard is fitted with mechanical switches and has an ergonomic design, which improves the player’s reaction time and provides a better feel, and this can be particularly important in multiplayer games.

When setting up a gamer’s room, it’s also worth buying a pair of sturdy gaming headphones and a high-resolution mouse. These items will ensure that the gaming set-up and the whole ‘gaming room’ look stunning, whilst remaining fully functional.

What else is worth considering when setting up a gaming room? The colour of the walls, the lighting

It’s not worth skimping too much on gaming equipment for one simple reason – cheap, poor-quality furniture and accessories certainly won’t last as long or perform as well as top-of-the-range items. Paradoxically, you may find that by choosing cheap alternatives, you end up paying more than you would for decent kit, as you’ll have to replace your gaming chair or desk sooner. That’s why it’s worth investing a little more to enjoy your gaming room set-up for longer.

It’s also worth giving some thought to the colour of the walls. Some gamers prefer dark colours, whilst others favour more striking, vibrant colour schemes. It’s a good idea to match the colour of the paint or wallpaper to your personal preferences and coordinate it with the furnishings in your gaming room so that everything works well together. You could also consider LED lighting, which – when installed correctly – will add character to the interior and ensure that the look of the gaming room impresses both the gamer and any guests who visit.
