Gaming desks – how can you build them yourself?
What height should a gaming desk be? What would be the most suitable width and length for the desktop? Which materials are worth considering, and is height adjustment really that important?
Desk top – what size should it be?
A gaming desk without a proper worktop isn’t really a desk. For this reason, before you start building your own piece of furniture, make sure you have the wood you’ll need to make it. You could use an old wardrobe door or some pallets for this. Thanks to these unconventional solutions, your desk will, without a doubt, be unique and one of a kind. If you want a professional approach, choose a worktop from a joiner or a furniture shop.
What are the ideal dimensions for a gaming desk top?
Adjusting the height and width of the desk top are factors you need to bear in mind. Their dimensions will depend on the space where you’ll be placing the desk and the functionality you require.
Gaming desks come in a variety of sizes. A gaming setup needs to be carefully planned. For this reason, don’t underestimate the importance of the height and width of the desktop on a gaming desk.
The standard height for this type of desk is 74–75 cm. It is designed for people who spend their time at the computer sitting down, are of average height, and whose chair is also of standard dimensions. However, you’ve decided to design your own desk, so it should be tailored in every way to your needs.
So, how do you work out the best height for your desk? There’s a very simple way to do this. Position your chair where you feel comfortable, then sit down and bend your elbows at a 90-degree angle. Ask a family member or flatmate to measure the distance from your elbow to the floor. This height will be the ideal height for your desk. If you’d like to be able to adjust the height as well, check the measurements whilst standing up too. Don’t forget to subtract this figure from the total result!
Worktop width: how much space do you need for yourself?
The amount of space you need to be comfortable whilst using your computer is entirely up to you. This size is also influenced by the number of gadgets you want to keep on the desk top. Before having the desk top made, it’s worth considering features such as a USB port or additional lighting. What should you look out for when choosing the ideal desk top dimensions?
First and foremost, focus on the space available and how to make practical use of it. A gaming desk that’s too long or too wide can prove to be a nuisance that you’ll want to get rid of as soon as possible. The width of the desktop should be large enough to prevent eye strain whilst working or gaming on your computer. This is particularly important if you’re using multiple monitors. However, it’s worth remembering that the work surface should be no less than 45 cm wide. Sticking to these guidelines will ensure you always feel comfortable at your computer.
Which base and frame should you choose for your desk?
Once you’ve got all the key measurements, it’s worth choosing a suitable frame and sturdy legs that can support the weight of your computer and monitor. Many people also choose to keep a console and gadgets such as smartphones or headphones on their desk. A good gaming desk is one that can support a weight of up to 50 kg.
And what about the look? What should your gaming desk look like? Its design is entirely up to you! Grab some paint and give it a black-and-red striped finish or a colourful chequerboard pattern. Take inspiration from the latest trends and enjoy a stunning desk whilst you play.
