Office chairs – an office chair that complies with health and safety regulations

The new regulation on health and safety at work at workstations equipped with computer monitors amends the provisions regarding workstation equipment. This also applies to chairs. What health and safety requirements should they now meet? ergonomic office chair?

An office chair that complies with health and safety regulations: what criteria should an ergonomic office chair meet?

In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy amending the regulations on health and safety at work, a chair forming part of the workstation’s equipment should have:

  • sufficient stability by fitting it with a base comprising at least five supports fitted with castors,
  • seat height adjustment, lumbar support height adjustment, backrest angle adjustment, and appropriate dimensions of the backrest and seat, ensuring a comfortable sitting position and freedom of movement,
  • contoured seats and backrests designed to follow the natural curve of the spine and thighs,
  • the ability to rotate 360 degrees about a vertical axis,
  • adjustable armrests.

The legislator has also included a provision stipulating that, at the employee’s request, the workstation must be fitted with a footrest.
